Dear Detachment Members and Friends,

You are cordially invited to our annual Marine Corps League – South Coast Detachment’s 244th Marine Corps Birthday Celebration. We expect to be sold out well in advance of Tuesday, November 5th, with only 200 seats available. You are respectfully encouraged to make your reservations soon before all the seats have been spoken for.

This year’s ceremony will begin with the reading of Major General John A. Lejeune’s – then Commandant (1921) – Order 47, inaugurating the Marine Corps birthday to be celebrated every November 10th. This will be followed by the viewing of current Commandant, General David H. Berger’s Birthday Message, and sword cutting of the cake. A piece will be given to our Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Mount, USMC (Retired), as well as the Oldest & Youngest Marine Present. The Ceremony will conclude with a Champagne Toast to our beloved Marine Corps.

The evening will begin with a no-host bar where there will be time to enjoy a cocktail (beer, wine and mixed drinks) while viewing the many treasures on display for our Silent Auction, where the winners will be announced at the end of the evening.

We will then enjoy dinner served by the Dana Point Yacht Club staff, starting with a selection of appetizers, followed by a choice of Prime Rib, Salmon, or Chicken Marsala, concluding with our birthday cake. There will be red and white wine provided at each table to enjoy with your dinner. Please specify your main entrée choice and if ordering multiple tickets, the number of each entrée when purchasing your tickets. Thank you!

Please reserve your seats via our secure PayPal link (please include the Names of Guests in your Party). If you prefer, send in the Names in your party and check (Note section: MC Birthday Dinner) to our Marine Corps League – South Coast Detachment, P.O. Box 3775, San Clemente, CA 92674-3775, Attn: Ken Sears, Paymaster.

I, along with our Marines and Fleet Marine Force Corpsmen, look forward to being in your company for what promises to be a wonderful Marine Corps Birthday Celebration/Dinner.

Semper Fidelis,

Colonel Kenneth J. Brown, USMC (Retired)
Commandant, Marine Corps League – South Coast Detachment #22

Marine Corp Birthday cake

Introducing our Guest of Honor – LtCol Stephen Mount, Marine Helo Pilot & Decorated Warrior  –

Blinded, slumped next to his crumpled chopper at the foot of Iraq’s Najaf cemetery, Stephen “Slade” Mount cupped his gunshot face to keep it from oozing into the street.

He knew he’d never pilot a Huey again.  But he never could’ve predicted on that brutal day in 2004 that he’d recover sight in one eye, carve out a long career in the Marine Corps and come to think – in a strange but comforting way – of his terrible wound as a kind of gift.  “I actually became a better Marine officer”, the Southern California Native Said.

Excerpt from Article in San Diego Union-Tribue by Carl Prine, Dec 23, 2016.

Join us at the Dana Point Yacht Club on November 5th, to celebrate the birthday of our beloved Marine Corps and to hear LtCol Mount’s story that changed his life forever.

We look forward to seeing you at the Celebration!
